In March 2020. PACADAR was awarded throughout an international competitive bidding with the manufacturing of the precast structures which take part of the Common Shielding System included in the new research infrastructure European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden.
ESS is under construction since 2014 and will be the world’s most advanced research facility for neutron science. It is aimed at studying atomic structures using neutrons and this facility could yield discoveries that will benefit energy, materials, medicine and the environment.
ESS is built and operated by a European Research Infrastructure Consortium composed of 13 countries. The buildings are fully integrated in the environment and ESS will be one of the largest research centers in the world.
PACADAR is contributing to the design and will carry out the manufacturing, delivery and installation overview of the precast concrete shielding blocks under the most demanding requirements of accuracy, tolerances and safety conditions when the ESS is fully operational.
The scope of work is for the service and supply of a Common Shielding System for six neutron instruments in accordance with the ESS Common Shielding project installation schedule.
This work/services will encompass initial design input (producing manufacturing drawings), sourcing and manufacturing of components, assembly; delivery to the ESS’ site; supervision of installation activities.
The manufacturing will be carried out in the factory that PACADAR owns in Valencia and will fulfil the manufacturing and control procedures required for such a complex Center.
