PACADAR manufactured and assembled precast reinforced-concrete elements that made up the Special Pavilion 5 of the Valencia Trade Fair.
The Special Pavilion of the Valencia Trade Fair consisted of a large hall of rectangular shape and 15 m tall.
A statically indeterminate structure solution was used so as to enable the use of floor decks bearing large superloads, since this pavilion had the special feature of having its roof at the ground level of the access road, with vehicle traffic areas and decorative elements, and, therefore, a superload of 2,000 Kg/m2 needed to be borne. The roof consisted of statically indeterminate box girders with a steep parabolic variable depth, ranging from 1.40 m at the centre of the span to 3.00 on the pier.
On the other hand, a perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality was possible thanks to the (also precast) piers housing therein the lighting elements of the pavilion.
Precast slabs of permanent formwork were placed on these girders and 50 cm wide hollow-core slabs were set between such girders.
Then, on the surface thus formed, a 10 cm thick compressive layer was concreted on the hollow-core slabs, thus completing a deck with a width of 0.60 m in total.
Thus, the special feature of this work contributed to remarkably enhance the aesthetics, since we went beyond the typically sober aspect of precast concrete structures and we managed to create visually large spaces by using elements that were large both in weight and dimensions.
This work was recognized and received several architecture awards:
- International Architecture Award 2010 from the Chicago Athenaeum and European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, Central Forum and Pavilion 5. 2010.
- National Building Award from ANDECE (Spanish National Association of Prefabricated Cement and derivatives). Pavilion 5. 2005.
- Honourable Mention, International Prize BIBM. Pavilion 5. 2005.
